Availability communicates care—you answer calls, respond to texts, show up when needed. But unlimited availability, with no boundaries, eventually leads to burnout, resentment, and diminished excellence. True service lives in the tension between being reasonably available and healthily limited.
You serve clients by being responsive and dependable. You also serve them by being rested, clear-minded, and spiritually anchored—and that requires boundaries. Saying, “I’m available during these times,” or, “I’ll respond first thing in the morning,” is not selfish; it’s sustainable.
Reasonableness, as Paul puts it, is a form of Christlike maturity. It means you’re neither rigid nor constantly reactive. You’re present without being enslaved.
Living this way requires you to trust that God can care for your business even when you’re not “on” 24/7—and that people can adapt when you set clear, gracious expectations.
Reflection Questions
Do I tend to overextend myself in the name of service, only to grow resentful or exhausted?
What boundary, if implemented, would allow me to serve more sustainably and joyfully?
Prayer
Lord, teach me a reasonable rhythm of availability and rest. Help me serve my clients well without sacrificing the health of my soul, my family, or my walk with You. Amen.
