Scripture
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them.” — Matthew 7:12 (ESV)
Devotional
Negotiation is central to your role. The world’s approach often sounds like: “Win at all costs.” But Jesus offers a different standard: the Golden Rule. Imagine yourself in the other party’s position—how would you want to be treated? What would feel fair?
Serving through fairness doesn’t mean being naïve or failing to advocate strongly for your client. It means looking for outcomes that are honest, sustainable, and respectful. It means refusing to “hide the ball” or celebrate victories that came through manipulation. It may mean saying, “We could push for more here, but at some point this becomes unreasonable.”
You represent your client, but you also represent Christ. When counterparties realize you negotiate firmly yet fairly, they will trust you—even when you’re on the other side next time. In a small way, your approach to negotiation reflects God’s justice and righteousness.
Reflection Questions
Do I ever celebrate “wins” that required me to violate the spirit of fairness?
How can I better apply the Golden Rule to my negotiation strategies?
Prayer
Lord, teach me to negotiate with both strength and fairness. Help me seek outcomes that honor You and respect everyone involved. Amen.
