Serving Through Teachability [Commercial Broker #121]
Scripture
“The wise of heart will receive commandments, but a babbling fool will come to ruin.” — Proverbs 10:8 (ESV)
Devotional
Excellence isn’t just about what you already know; it’s about how willing you are to keep learning. In commercial real estate, markets shift, strategies evolve, technology changes, and new players enter. The moment you decide you’ve “seen it all” is the moment you stop growing.
Teachability is a form of humility. It shows up when you ask questions instead of pretending to know, when you listen carefully to partners with different expertise, and when you invite feedback instead of avoiding it. A teachable broker says, “Help me understand,” more often than, “I already know.”
Clients feel safer with someone who is learning than with someone who is defensive. They sense the difference between arrogance and a confident humility that says, “I’ll find out what I don’t know.” God can pour new wisdom into hearts that stay open; closed hearts miss His fresh insight.
You serve clients and stakeholders better when you stay a student—of Scripture, of your craft, and of the people you’re called to help.
Reflection Questions
Where have I silently decided, “I already know everything I need to know”?
Who could I learn from this month—inside or outside my firm—if I humbled myself and asked?
Prayer
Lord, keep my heart teachable. Protect me from pride that thinks it already knows enough, and grow me into a wiser, humbler servant in this industry. Amen.
