Serving Through Wise Use of Silence in Negotiation [Commercial Broker #136]

Scripture

“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.” — Proverbs 17:27 (ESV)

Devotional

In negotiation, silence can feel uncomfortable. Many rush to fill it—overexplaining, conceding too quickly, or revealing more than they should. But wise silence can be one of the most powerful tools you use to serve your client and the process.

When you pause instead of rushing to respond, you give yourself time to think, pray, and discern. When you allow the other party to sit with an offer or proposal without instantly justifying it, you give space for them to process seriously. When you hold back from nervous chatter, you avoid saying things you’ll later regret.

A “cool spirit” doesn’t mean apathy. It means measured, thoughtful restraint. You’re not ruled by anxiety or ego; you’re guided by wisdom. Silence, used well, can de-escalate tension and convey confidence.

Sometimes, the best way to serve is to say less—and listen more.

Reflection Questions

Do I tend to talk too quickly or too much when negotiations become tense?

How can I grow in the discipline of pausing and thinking before I speak?

Prayer

Lord, teach me to restrain my words and keep a cool spirit. Help me use silence wisely as a tool for clarity, peace, and wise negotiation. Amen.
