Serving When You’re Not the Hero [Commercial Broker #129]
Scripture
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” — John 3:30 (ESV)
Devotional
Sometimes, serving with excellence means pointing clients to resources, partners, or opportunities that don’t revolve around you. Another broker may have a stronger relationship. A different firm might offer a better fit. A consultant could provide expertise you don’t have.
In those moments, your flesh may want to cling to control—to stay the “hero” of the story. But humility says, “I want what’s best for you, even if it doesn’t spotlight me.” That posture reflects the heart of John the Baptist, who gladly stepped back so that Jesus could be elevated.
You are not the savior of your clients. You are a steward—and sometimes stewardship means stepping aside or bringing others forward. God sees this hidden sacrifice and delights when you choose His glory and others’ good over your own prominence.
Ironically, people often trust you more when they see you’re not obsessed with being the center.
Reflection Questions
Is there a situation where I need to involve or defer to someone else for my client’s good?
How do I react internally when I’m not the hero of the story—threatened, or grateful to serve in any role?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, free me from the need to be the hero. Help me gladly step back when needed so that others are blessed and You are glorified above my own importance. Amen.
