Serving with Emotional Intelligence [Commercial Broker #75]

Serving with Emotional Intelligence [Commercial Broker #75]

Scripture

“The purposes in a man’s heart are like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.” — Proverbs 20:5 (ESV)

Devotional

Emotional intelligence—the ability to recognize, understand, and respond wisely to emotions in yourself and others—is a powerful tool for serving well. Deals don’t break only over numbers; they often break over pride, fear, misunderstanding, or offense.

When you notice a client’s tone shift, a facial expression tighten, or an awkward silence settle in, you’re standing at a crossroads. You can plow ahead, pretending not to notice—or gently ask, “I sense some hesitation. What’s on your mind?” That simple question can surface concerns before they become barriers.

Emotional intelligence is rooted in love. It requires paying attention to more than just data points. Jesus constantly read the hearts of people around Him and responded with perfect wisdom. While you won’t do it perfectly, you can ask Him to help you “draw out” what’s beneath the surface.

Reflection Questions

Do I tend to ignore emotional cues and stay in “facts only” mode?

How can I slow down enough in conversations to notice what people are feeling, not just what they’re saying?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, give me insight into the hearts of those I serve. Help me recognize emotions and respond with wisdom, patience, and care. Amen.
