Silence as a Spiritual Practice [Attorney #63]

Listen to devotional here.

Scripture: “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.” — Psalm 62:1 (ESV)

Devotional

Attorneys spend much of their time speaking—presenting, persuading, advising, negotiating. Silence is often seen as unproductive, even dangerous in litigation. But spiritually, silence is powerful. It’s where you learn to hear.

Psalm 62 invites the soul to wait in silence. Not just physical stillness, but interior quiet—a posture of surrender before God.

What if silence became part of your practice—not in court, but in your spirit? A place where you lay down the urge to control, argue, explain. A place where you stop speaking and start listening. To God. To your own soul. To what really matters.

In the noise of law and life, silence becomes sacred ground. It recenters you. It reminds you that your voice isn’t the most important one in the room—God’s is.

You don’t have to fill every gap. Let silence be your teacher. In the quiet, the Spirit speaks. In the stillness, you’re reminded who holds your life.

Reflection Questions:

  1. When was the last time you practiced intentional silence before God?

  2. What fears or discomforts arise when you're still?

  3. How can you build space for silence in your daily or weekly rhythm?

Prayer

God, teach me to be still. Quiet the noise in my heart. Help me listen—not just to voices around me, but to Your Spirit within me. Amen.
