Scripture: “Speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ.” — Ephesians 4:15 (ESV)
Devotional
Truth is foundational to the practice of law. Arguments, contracts, testimony—all hinge on truth. But Paul reminds us: truth must be spoken in love.
It’s possible to be factually correct and spiritually wrong. To use truth as a hammer instead of a bridge. To win the point but wound the person.
Christian attorneys are called to something more—truth that builds up, not tears down.
Love doesn't dilute truth—it dignifies it. It means you speak honestly, but with empathy. You challenge, but not to crush. You correct, but not to control.
This balance is especially important in conflict. In deposition, cross-examination, or tough negotiations, your tone can either escalate or de-escalate. You can reflect Christ not just in what you say—but in how you say it.
Let love shape your language. Let grace season your words. Let your truth-telling point to the One who is Truth—and who speaks to us with mercy.
Reflection Questions:
Do you struggle more with speaking truth boldly or with speaking it lovingly?
How can love practically influence the way you communicate at work?
Is there someone you need to revisit—a conversation that needs more grace?
Prayer
Lord, help me speak truth with love. Let my words reflect Your heart. Guard me from using truth as a weapon, and teach me to build up others in all I say.
