Stewarding Rest as Worship [TDPOW #91]

Stewarding Rest as Worship [TDPOW #91]

Scripture: Mark 6:31 — “And He said to them, ‘Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while.’”

Devotional

Even Jesus’ disciples needed rest. After a season of intense ministry, Jesus didn’t just tell them to “push through”—He invited them to come away and rest. Rest is not laziness; it’s an act of trust and obedience. It acknowledges that God is God and you are not.

Stewarding rest means recognizing your limits and honoring God’s design for your body and mind. It includes daily rhythms (sleep, breaks, reflection) and weekly or seasonal pauses. When you refuse to rest, you are not just risking burnout—you are subtly declaring, Everything depends on me.

Rest can itself be worship: a way of saying, “Lord, I trust You to run the world while I sleep.” As you receive rest as a gift and not a guilty pleasure, you become more present, more focused, and more available to serve Him and others well.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How well are you currently stewarding rest in your life—physically, emotionally, spiritually?

  2. What beliefs or fears keep you from resting as you should?

  3. What one change could you make this week to honor God’s design for rest?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for inviting me to rest. Forgive me for treating rest as optional or unspiritual. Teach me to receive it as Your gift and to trust You more deeply as I pause from my work. Amen.
