Stewarding the Power of Persuasion [Attorney #192]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.” — Proverbs 16:21
Devotional
Persuasion is one of the central tools of legal practice. You use words to explain, negotiate, challenge, advise, and advocate. Over time, professional training can make you highly skilled at influencing the way others understand a situation. That ability is valuable, but it also carries moral responsibility.
There is a difference between persuasion and manipulation. Persuasion presents truth clearly and compellingly while allowing others to make informed judgments. Manipulation attempts to control the outcome by withholding, distorting, pressuring, or exploiting another person’s vulnerability. The line between the two can become especially important when the stakes are high and the desire to win becomes strong.
As a Christian attorney, you are called to steward persuasive ability rather than simply maximize it. Your words should serve truth rather than obscure it. Your arguments should be strong without becoming dishonest, and your negotiating skill should not depend upon demeaning or misleading others. The goal is not to surrender advocacy but to practice it within the boundaries of integrity.
God has given you the capacity to influence people through language. When that influence is surrendered to Him, persuasion becomes a means of serving truth, bringing clarity, and advocating faithfully.
Reflection Questions
• Where is the boundary between persuasion and manipulation most difficult for me?
• Do my methods of influence reflect the same integrity as the positions I advocate?
Action Step
Review one important communication or argument today and remove any language that could unnecessarily mislead, pressure, or obscure the truth.
Prayer
Father, help me steward the power of persuasion faithfully. Let my words be clear, truthful, respectful, and worthy of the trust others place in me. Amen.
