Scripture: Proverbs 16:32 — “Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.”
Devotional
Emotional reactions at work—anger, frustration, defensiveness, discouragement—can either be stewarded or unleashed. Scripture teaches that ruling your spirit—managing your emotions under God’s guidance—is a greater victory than winning a battle.
Stewarding your emotions doesn’t mean suppressing them; it means recognizing, processing, and responding in a way that honors Christ. When you’re provoked, you pause rather than explode. When you’re discouraged, you turn to God rather than giving up. When you’re anxious, you pray instead of spiraling.
Your emotional life significantly impacts your colleagues. A calm presence in a crisis, a gentle response in conflict, or a hopeful word in discouragement can change the atmosphere. As you submit your emotions to the Holy Spirit, your inner life becomes a powerful testimony.
Reflection Questions:
What emotions most often feel “out of control” for you at work?
How do those emotions impact your decisions, words, and relationships?
What practices—prayer, Scripture, pausing, wise counsel—can help you better “rule your spirit”?
Prayer
Lord, You know my emotions better than I do. Help me steward them under Your authority. Make me slow to anger, rich in patience, and anchored in Your peace so that my responses glorify You. Amen.
