Stewardship, Not Ownership [Accountant #6]

Scripture “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.” — Psalm 24:1

Devotional

One of the most freeing truths in Scripture is also one of the most challenging: we do not own what we manage. Everything ultimately belongs to God. As accountants, this truth strikes close to home because our work revolves around resources, assets, liabilities, and responsibility.

Ownership creates pressure. Stewardship creates perspective. When you believe everything depends on you, the weight can feel overwhelming. But when you remember that you are managing what belongs to God, your work becomes an act of partnership rather than control.

Stewardship reframes success. It shifts the question from “How much did I produce?” to “Was I faithful with what I was given?” It allows you to work diligently without carrying the burden of ultimate outcomes. God does not ask you to guarantee results—He asks you to manage wisely and honestly.

In accounting, stewardship shows up in careful attention, ethical restraint, and thoughtful counsel. It means treating every account, report, and recommendation as something entrusted—not possessed. It also invites humility, reminding us that our skills and opportunities are gifts, not entitlements.

When you work as a steward, your role gains dignity and direction. You are not simply maintaining systems; you are participating in God’s ongoing work of order, accountability, and provision.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where do you feel pressure to act as an owner rather than a steward?

  2. How might your stress level change if you trusted God more fully with outcomes?

Prayer

Lord, remind me that everything I manage belongs to You. Help me work as a faithful steward, trusting You with results and honoring You through integrity. Amen.

This devotional is intended to help you integrate your faith into your daily work and calling. It is not a substitute for personal time with God in Scripture, prayer, and worship, which are essential for knowing Christ, loving Him deeply, and becoming more like Him.
