Scripture: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” — Psalm 127:1a (ESV)
Devotional
Legal professionals are trained to be self-sufficient—confident in reasoning, assertive in planning, relentless in execution. But that very strength can become a spiritual weakness when it leads to self-reliance.
Psalm 127 warns us: effort without dependence is vanity. Building your career, winning your case, growing your reputation—none of it lasts if God is not in it. You may succeed by the world’s standards, but your labor will leave you empty.
The danger of self-reliance is that it subtly crowds out the presence of God. You stop praying. You stop listening. You start believing that success comes from strategy alone, forgetting the Sovereign hand behind every open door.
Humility is the antidote. Not the absence of strength, but the surrender of control. It’s rising each day with the posture: “Lord, unless You do it, I labor in vain.”
This doesn’t negate diligence—it sanctifies it. You still work hard, still prepare thoroughly—but now, your foundation is trust, not pride.
God is not asking for your perfection. He’s inviting your dependence. And when He builds your house, it will stand.
Reflection Questions:
Where in your work have you been tempted to rely on your own strength?
What would it look like to invite God more deeply into your daily decisions?
How might your practice shift if you prayed before every major task?
Prayer
Lord, I confess my tendency to depend on myself. Remind me that apart from You, I can do nothing. Build my life and practice in a way that reflects Your power, not mine.
