The Discipline of Listening [Financial Advisor #172]
Scripture
“To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.” — Proverbs 18:13.
Devotional
Many people listen with the intention of responding.
Wise advisors listen with the intention of understanding.
In your profession, listening is one of the most valuable skills you can develop. Behind every financial question is often a deeper concern. Behind every stated goal may be an unspoken fear, hope, or priority.
The better you listen, the better you serve.
Jesus consistently demonstrated the power of listening. He asked questions. He engaged people thoughtfully. He understood hearts before addressing circumstances.
Listening communicates respect.
It builds trust.
It uncovers important information.
It helps people feel valued and understood.
Yet listening requires patience.
It means resisting the urge to interrupt.
It means focusing on the other person rather than preparing your next response.
It means slowing down enough to truly hear.
In a world full of noise, people deeply appreciate someone who genuinely listens.
And often, the greatest opportunities for influence begin with a listening ear.
