Scripture: “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak.” — Matthew 12:36 (ESV)
Devotional
In law, words are your primary tool—spoken, written, argued, recorded. You wield them professionally, strategically, and often persuasively. But Jesus offers a sobering reminder: our words don’t just disappear. They echo into eternity.
Every careless word. Every flippant comment. Every subtle dig or calculated distortion—they all matter to God. Why? Because words have the power to create or destroy, to heal or to wound, to reflect truth or mask it.
As a Christian attorney, your words carry more than legal consequence—they carry moral weight. Clients may remember how you spoke to them more than what you did for them. Colleagues may notice whether your speech reflects grace or ego. Opponents may observe whether your tone honors God even in disagreement.
Let your speech be seasoned with salt—full of wisdom, compassion, and clarity. Let your arguments be firm but fair. Let your emails reflect both professionalism and Christlikeness. Let your courtroom presence be bold but never arrogant.
Words build cases—but they also build legacies. And your legacy, if rooted in Christ, will reflect not just the strength of your reasoning, but the spirit behind your speech.
Reflection Questions:
How intentional are you with the words you use in your legal practice?
What habits of speech might need refining in light of this Scripture?
Are your words leaving people feeling respected, uplifted, and valued?
Prayer
Jesus, guard my tongue. Let my words reflect Your truth, love, and integrity. Teach me to speak with care and conviction, knowing that every word carries weight before You.
