The Loneliness of Integrity [Attorney #7]

Scripture: “Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.” — Proverbs 28:6 (ESV)

Devotional

Integrity is often romanticized—praised in theory, admired from afar. But in the trenches of professional life, integrity can feel lonely. It may cost you clients, promotions, or peer approval. It may mean refusing shortcuts that others embrace, turning down business that doesn’t align with your convictions, or losing sleep over decisions your colleagues make with ease. In a results-driven profession, integrity rarely feels efficient. But it always honors God.

Scripture does not measure success by income or influence. Proverbs reminds us that it is better to walk with integrity and little than to be wealthy with compromise. Why? Because integrity is not merely about ethics—it’s about identity. When you walk in integrity, you walk in alignment with the character of Christ. You honor God more than gain. You answer to Him first, even when no one else is watching.

You may feel the sting of isolation when you choose the harder road. But take heart: you are never truly alone. Christ sees. He upholds the upright. He honors those who fear Him over man. And in the long view—the eternal view—there is no loss in choosing integrity.

Let your conduct be your quiet witness. Let your example rebuke compromise without a word. Your integrity may not always be celebrated, but it will never be wasted.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where has integrity cost you something recently—or where might it soon?

  2. Do you believe God sees and honors your faithfulness, even when no one else does?

  3. What internal or external pressures challenge your commitment to righteousness?

Prayer

Lord, when integrity feels costly or lonely, strengthen my resolve. Help me choose what’s right over what’s easy, and trust that You are my rewarder and my defender.

This devotional is designed to encourage you as you live out your faith in the workplace. It works best when paired with regular time in Scripture, prayer, and worship—the rhythms through which we grow to know Christ more deeply and become more like Him.
