The Service of Staying Calm When Others Don’t [Commercial Broker #77]

The Service of Staying Calm When Others Don’t [Commercial Broker #77]

Scripture

“A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” — Proverbs 15:1 (ESV)

Devotional

High-stress moments can bring out the worst in people—raised voices, sharp emails, heated conference calls. In those moments, one calm person can change the entire atmosphere. As a follower of Christ, you’re called to be that presence.

A soft answer doesn’t mean a weak answer. It means you speak truth without matching the emotional temperature in the room. You lower your tone, slow your words, and refuse to escalate. You might say, “I hear your frustration. Let’s slow down and walk through this together.”

This kind of response can disarm anger, invite reason, and restore focus. It also guards your own heart from getting swept into sinful reactions. Your emotional restraint is not just professionalism; it’s fruit of the Spirit.

Every conflict gives you a chance to either stir up anger or turn it away. Your calm is a gift to everyone involved.

Reflection Questions

How do I typically respond when others become heated—do I mirror them or de-escalate?

What practices (breathing, quick prayer, pausing) help me respond more calmly?

Prayer

Lord, make me a calming presence in tense situations. When others react in anger, help me answer with wisdom, gentleness, and self-control. Amen.
