The Spiritual Discipline of Preparation [Attorney #27]

Scripture: “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” — Proverbs 21:5 (ESV)

Devotional

Preparation is a hallmark of excellent legal work. From researching precedent to building a case strategy, your success often hinges not on what happens in the moment—but on how well you’ve prepared for it. What if that preparation, though technical, is also spiritual?

Scripture praises diligence. But it also warns against haste. Rushing into meetings, hearings, or decisions without thoughtful planning is not just unwise—it is unfaithful stewardship. As a Christian attorney, your preparation is not merely a professional obligation—it’s a way to honor God.

When you prepare with diligence, you reflect His order, wisdom, and care. When you approach your work with thoroughness and prayer, you create space for the Spirit to guide, even in the smallest details.

Preparation isn’t glamorous. It’s rarely praised. But it is holy. It’s in those quiet hours of unseen labor that you model obedience, humility, and excellence. And the fruit of that discipline extends far beyond results—it forms you into a faithful servant.

Don’t rush what God has called you to build with care.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How do you typically approach preparation—in faith or in anxiety?

  2. Are there parts of your work you’ve been tempted to rush through or neglect?

  3. How can you invite God into your preparation process this week?

Prayer

Lord, help me approach my preparation as worship. Teach me to plan with care, to study with purpose, and to labor with excellence—not for perfection, but for Your glory.
