The Temptation of Outcome Over Obedience [Attorney #5]

Scripture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)

Devotional

In the legal profession, outcomes are everything—or so it seems. Wins build careers. Losses feel like failure. But Scripture reminds us that outcomes don’t define obedience. Faithfulness does.

You can prepare thoroughly, argue well, and still lose the case. You can serve faithfully, speak truthfully, and still be misunderstood. But success in God’s eyes is measured by trust and obedience, not results.

This is a radical reorientation for a profession built on results. It doesn’t mean excellence doesn’t matter—it does. But it frees you from idolatry. When you worship success, compromise follows. When you worship Christ, faithfulness endures.

Let go of the need to control every outcome. Your job is to steward, not to sovereignly orchestrate. Rest in God’s promise: when you trust Him, He will direct your path—even when it leads through disappointment.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you tied your identity too tightly to legal outcomes?

  2. How can you measure your work by faithfulness, not just results?

  3. Is there a recent case or client situation you need to entrust fully to God?

Prayer

Father, I surrender the outcomes to You. Help me walk in obedience, not anxiety. Teach me to rest in Your wisdom and honor You with my work, win or lose.

This devotional is designed to encourage you as you live out your faith in the workplace. It works best when paired with regular time in Scripture, prayer, and worship—the rhythms through which we grow to know Christ more deeply and become more like Him.
