The Temptation of Prideful Knowledge [Attorney #28]

Scripture: “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.” — 1 Corinthians 8:1b (ESV)

Devotional

Legal training sharpens your intellect. Your ability to think critically, analyze arguments, and command complex knowledge is vital to your role. But Paul offers a needed warning: knowledge can puff up. Love must build up.

In a field that often celebrates brilliance, the temptation to place your identity in your intellect is strong. You may find affirmation in being the smartest in the room, the most articulate, the quickest to find a flaw. But the Gospel reminds us that love—not knowledge—is the true measure of maturity.

Your insight is a gift, but it is not your god. When knowledge becomes a tool for superiority rather than service, pride takes root. When brilliance overshadows compassion, your work loses its witness.

Christ never used His wisdom to impress. He used it to heal, teach, and liberate. As His follower, you are called to do the same.

Let your knowledge be submitted to love. Use your skill not to showcase yourself, but to strengthen others. When love governs your learning, your practice becomes a reflection of grace.

Reflection Questions:

  1. Where have you been tempted to value being right more than being loving?

  2. How can you remain humble while operating in a field that prizes intellect?

  3. What does it mean to lead with love in your next client or colleague interaction?

Prayer

God, I thank You for the mind You’ve given me. Keep me from pride. Teach me to use my knowledge to serve, not to elevate. Let my wisdom be guided by love, always.
