Thorns and Thistles at the Office [TDPOW #42]

Scripture: Genesis 3:18 — “Thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you…”

Devotional

Thorns and thistles are more than plants; they are symbols of resistance. They picture everything in your work that “pushes back”—technical glitches, miscommunication, office politics, unfair policies, broken processes, and even your own limitations.

Sometimes we assume that if God is with us, everything should go smoothly. But Scripture tells a different story. Even faithful people face “thorns and thistles” at work. The presence of difficulty doesn’t mean the absence of God—it reminds you that you live between Eden and eternity.

The hope of the gospel is not that God removes every thorn now, but that He redeems your work in spite of them. He grows patience, perseverance, humility, and dependence in you. Thorns that were meant for frustration can become tools of formation in His hands.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What “thorns and thistles” are you dealing with in your work environment right now?

  2. How have these frustrations been shaping your character—for better or for worse?

  3. What might God want to grow in you through these challenges?

Prayer

Father, You see the “thorns and thistles” I face at work. Instead of only resenting them, help me see how You can use them to shape me. Grow patience, humility, and trust in my heart. Amen.
