When Good Deals Become Idols [Real Estate Dev #163]

Scripture

“Keep yourselves from idols.” — 1 John 5:21

Devotional

Idolatry can appear in unexpected places.

Even a good development project can become an idol.

It happens when the deal begins controlling your emotions, identity, priorities, or relationships. You become unable to imagine walking away. Every obstacle feels personal. Prayer subtly changes from “Lord, guide me” to “Lord, make this happen.”

The project itself may not be wrong.

Your relationship with it has become disordered.

Developers naturally become invested in their projects. Vision and persistence are necessary. But there is a difference between commitment and worship.

You should be able to hold every project with open hands.

If God closes the door, you can release it.

If integrity requires walking away, you can leave.

If circumstances change, you can reevaluate without feeling that your identity is collapsing.

Your worth does not rise with a successful project or fall with a failed one.

You belong to Christ.

Development is your calling, not your god.

One of the healthiest prayers a developer can pray is also one of the hardest:

“Lord, I want this opportunity, but I want Your will more.”

That prayer restores the proper order.

Reflection Questions

• Is there a project or opportunity I am holding too tightly?

• How do project outcomes affect my identity and emotions?

• Could I willingly release a deal if God made it clear I should?

Action Step

Name one project you deeply want to succeed and intentionally surrender its outcome to God.

Prayer

Lord, protect me from turning good opportunities into idols. Help me hold every project with open hands and desire Your will more than any deal, achievement, or financial return. Amen.
