When You Are Misunderstood [TDPOW #179]

1 Corinthians 4:3–4 — “…it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court… It is the Lord who judges me.”
Devotional
Being misunderstood at work is painful—your motives questioned, your words twisted, your actions misread. You may feel compelled to defend yourself endlessly, replaying conversations and crafting explanations to win everyone’s approval.
Paul faced constant misunderstanding, yet he found freedom by remembering whose judgment ultimately matters. He didn’t dismiss others completely, but he refused to be ruled by their opinions. He anchored his identity in the Lord who truly knows his heart.
When you’re misunderstood, seek clarity where you can: explain gently, correct errors, and own any part that was unclear or unwise. But after you’ve done what you can, rest your case with God. He sees what others don’t, and His verdict is the one that stands forever.
Reflection Questions
Are you currently carrying the weight of feeling misunderstood by someone at work?
Have you done what you reasonably can to clarify the situation?
What would it look like to entrust your reputation to God, even if others don’t fully understand?
Prayer
Lord, You know my heart better than I do. When I am misunderstood, guide me in what to say and what to leave in Your hands. Help me rest in Your judgment and approval, not in the shifting opinions of others. Amen.
