When Your Boss Isn’t Godly [TDPOW #97]

When Your Boss Isn’t Godly [TDPOW #97]

Scripture: 1 Peter 2:18 — “Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust.”

Devotional

It’s easy to respect a good leader—someone fair, kind, and wise. It’s much harder when authority is harsh, inconsistent, or ungodly. Yet Peter calls believers to show respect even to unjust masters, not because injustice is okay, but because they live “mindful of God.”

Respect does not mean blind obedience to sin or abuse. There are times to set boundaries, seek help, or even leave. But as long as you remain under someone’s authority, your attitude toward them is ultimately an expression of your attitude toward Christ. You can disagree without dishonor. You can speak truth without contempt.

In difficult authority structures, your stewardship is to guard your heart. Ask God for wisdom on when to speak, what to endure, and whether it’s time to move on. In the meantime, let your work and your responses reflect the character of the true Master you serve.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How do you respond internally to difficult or ungodly authority at work?

  2. Are there places where your attitude has become resentful or contemptuous?

  3. What would it look like to be “mindful of God” in how you interact with your leaders?

Prayer

Lord, You see the leaders over me and know their strengths and failures. Help me honor You in how I respond to them. Give me wisdom, courage, and grace, and show me when to speak, when to endure, and when to move. Amen.
