Scripture
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5–6.
Devotional
As another workweek comes to a close, this is a good time to ask an honest question:
Where did I depend more on myself than on God?
It's surprisingly easy to begin the week with prayer and then spend the rest of it relying on experience, intelligence, preparation, or determination. None of those are bad. In fact, God often uses them. But they were never meant to replace dependence on Him.
Perhaps you faced a difficult decision and trusted only your own reasoning. Maybe you carried a burden without ever asking God for wisdom. Maybe anxiety over a situation kept you awake because you believed the outcome depended entirely on you.
God never intended His children to carry those burdens alone.
Trust is more than believing God exists. It is choosing to place your confidence in His wisdom even when you cannot see how everything will work out. It means acknowledging that He sees what you cannot see, knows what you do not know, and is already working in ways you may never recognize.
Looking back over this week, celebrate the moments when you sensed God's guidance. Then honestly acknowledge the moments when self-reliance quietly replaced dependence on Him.
God never asks you to be self-sufficient. He invites you to be fully dependent upon Him.
Reflection Questions
What situations this week caused me to rely primarily on my own abilities?
Did I seek God's wisdom before making important decisions?
Where did anxiety reveal that I was trying to control outcomes?
How have I seen God's faithfulness this week despite my own limitations?
Action Step
Identify one situation from this past week where you relied mostly on yourself. Spend time thanking God for His faithfulness despite your self-reliance, and surrender that area to Him before beginning the new week.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I trust myself more than I trust You. Thank You for patiently leading me even when I rely too heavily on my own understanding. Teach me to seek Your wisdom first, to surrender what I cannot control, and to depend on Your strength instead of my own. Help me become a person whose confidence rests in You alone. Amen.
