Whose Approval Were You Seeking [Saturday Edition #14]

Scripture

“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people?” Galatians 1:10.

Devotional

The desire for approval can quietly influence the way you work.

A compliment can lift your spirits. Criticism can stay with you for days. Being recognized can make your efforts feel worthwhile, while being overlooked can leave you wondering whether your work matters at all.

As you reflect on this past week, consider how much the opinions of others influenced you.

Did you make decisions based on what was right or on what would make you look successful? Did you avoid a difficult conversation because you feared someone’s reaction? Did you become discouraged when your contribution went unnoticed? Did the desire to impress others affect the way you spoke, served, or worked?

Wanting to be respected and appreciated is natural. The problem begins when the approval of others becomes more important than the approval of God.

Living for God’s approval brings freedom. You no longer have to adjust your values to satisfy the expectations of others. You can choose integrity even when it is unpopular. You can serve faithfully without recognition. You can receive criticism without allowing it to define your worth.

God sees every act of obedience that others overlook.

He sees the difficult decision made with integrity. He sees the quiet act of service. He sees the work done faithfully when no one offers praise.

As you look back over the week, ask God to reveal where the desire for human approval influenced your heart. Then realign your focus with the One whose approval matters most.

Reflection Questions

  • When did I find myself seeking the approval or recognition of others this week?

  • How did criticism, praise, or being overlooked affect my attitude?

  • Were there decisions I made primarily because I wanted others to think well of me?

  • What would change if pleasing God became my primary motivation?

Action Step

Identify one moment from this past week when the desire for approval influenced your attitude, decision, or response. Ask God to help you recognize similar situations in the future and choose faithfulness to Him instead.

Prayer

Lord, You know how easily I can become concerned with what others think of me. Reveal the places where I have allowed the desire for recognition, praise, or acceptance to influence my heart. Help me find freedom in knowing that You see my faithfulness even when others do not. Teach me to make decisions, serve others, and carry out my responsibilities with the desire to please You above all else. Amen.
