Wisdom Before Opportunity [Real Estate Dev #151]
Scripture
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach.” — James 1:5
Devotional
Real estate development presents a steady stream of opportunities. A property becomes available. A municipality approaches you. A tenant expresses interest. An investor proposes a partnership. A deal suddenly appears possible.
The natural question is often, “Can we make this work?”
Wisdom asks a better question: “Should we?”
Not every opportunity is an assignment from God. Some opportunities may be profitable but distracting. Others may require compromises you should never make. Still others may be good opportunities that simply belong to someone else.
James tells us that when we lack wisdom, we should ask God. That invitation matters because development decisions regularly exceed the limits of spreadsheets and experience. You can analyze demographics, construction costs, rents, financing, entitlements, and returns and still not know whether you should proceed.
God sees what you cannot.
He sees the future consequences of today's decision. He knows the people who will become involved. He understands risks that have not yet surfaced and opportunities that have not yet appeared.
Seeking wisdom means refusing to let excitement outrun discernment.
Before asking God to bless the opportunity in front of you, ask whether it is an opportunity He wants you to pursue.
That small change in prayer can change the entire direction of a project—and sometimes your life.

• Do I tend to evaluate opportunities primarily by their financial potential?
• How consistently do I seek God's wisdom before becoming emotionally committed to a deal?
• Is there an opportunity before me right now that needs deeper discernment?
Action Step
Choose one current opportunity and pray specifically, “Lord, show me whether this is something You want me to pursue.”
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom beyond my own experience and understanding. Protect me from pursuing opportunities simply because they appear attractive. Help me recognize the assignments You have prepared for me and faithfully walk away from those You have not. Amen.
