Wisdom Before Strategy [Attorney #191]

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” — Proverbs 9:10
Devotional
Attorneys are trained to think strategically. You anticipate arguments, evaluate risks, identify weaknesses, and determine the best path forward. Strategy is an important professional skill, but Scripture reminds you that wisdom begins somewhere deeper than analysis. It begins with reverence for God.
There may be times when a strategy appears effective but does not sit comfortably with your conscience. A particular approach may be technically permissible yet unnecessarily aggressive, misleading, or damaging. In those moments, wisdom asks more than whether something can be done. It asks whether it should be done and whether the manner in which it is done reflects the character of Christ.
Seeking wisdom before strategy does not make you less effective. It helps ensure that your effectiveness is directed toward faithful purposes. Prayer can slow your thinking long enough to expose motives, reveal alternatives, or remind you of principles that pressure might otherwise cause you to overlook. God sees dimensions of a situation that you cannot see, including the consequences that extend beyond the immediate legal objective.
Your training equips you to develop sound strategies. Your relationship with God helps you determine which strategies are worthy of pursuing. Let wisdom lead and strategy follow.
Reflection Questions
• Do I sometimes become so focused on strategy that I fail to ask whether the approach honors God?
• Where do I currently need wisdom that goes beyond technical legal knowledge?
Action Step
Before finalizing one important strategy today, pause and ask whether both the goal and the method reflect integrity, wisdom, and respect for others.
Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom that goes beyond professional skill. Help me develop strategies that are effective without compromising integrity, compassion, or faithfulness to You. Amen.
