Wisdom in Distinguishing Needs from Wants [Commercial Broker #146]

Scripture

“Better is a little with the fear of the Lord than great treasure and trouble with it.” — Proverbs 15:16 (ESV)

Devotional

Clients often come with a long wish list: location, visibility, signage, parking, tenant mix, amenities, build-out allowances, rate, and term. While it’s good to aim high, wisdom helps distinguish between needs and wants. Not everything can be top priority.

Helping clients clarify this distinction serves them deeply. You might ask, “What is truly mission-critical for your business, and what would simply be nice to have?” As you guide this process, you help them avoid chasing perfection at the cost of progress—or sacrificing what’s essential for the sake of cosmetic preferences.

This same discernment applies to your own life and career. The world tells you that more—more deals, more income, more recognition—is always better. Scripture reminds you that “a little with the fear of the Lord” is better than “great treasure and trouble.”

Wisdom knows the difference between what is truly necessary and what is simply noise.

Reflection Questions

In my own heart, what “wants” am I treating as “needs” right now?

How can I help a current client distinguish between what’s essential and what’s optional in their search or negotiation?

Prayer

Father, teach me to value what You value. Help me and those I serve to distinguish clearly between needs and wants, choosing what leads to peace, not trouble. Amen.
