Wisdom in Entitlement Strategy [Real Estate Dev #174]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” — Romans 12:18.
Devotional
Entitlements can become adversarial quickly.
Developers have objectives. Municipal staff have requirements. Elected officials face political realities. Residents have concerns.
When disagreement grows, it is easy to treat the process as a battle to win.
Wisdom takes a broader view.
You can advocate strongly for a project while respecting the legitimate responsibilities of others.
Listen carefully to concerns before dismissing them.
Explain the project's benefits honestly without overstating them.
Address reasonable objections where possible.
Treat staff respectfully even when you disagree.
Do not make every concession a defeat or every objection an attack.
Romans reminds us to pursue peace as far as it depends upon us.
Peace does not mean abandoning a good project or accepting unreasonable demands.
It means refusing to let conflict determine your character.
The entitlement process often reveals leadership more clearly than the finished development does.
People may forget individual zoning arguments.
They will remember whether you listened, whether you were truthful, and whether you treated them with respect.
Your conduct before approval may determine the trust available after approval.
Reflection Questions
• How do I respond when municipal officials or residents oppose my plans?
• Do I listen carefully before defending my position?
• What would peaceable but strong advocacy look like in a current entitlement?
Action Step
Identify one stakeholder who has concerns about a project and seek to understand their perspective before trying to change it.
Prayer
Father, give me wisdom and grace in the entitlement process. Help me advocate honestly, listen respectfully, and pursue peace without compromising truth or responsible stewardship. Amen.
