Wisdom in Handling Disappointment [Commercial Broker #147]

Scripture

“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” — Proverbs 13:12 (ESV)

Devotional

Deals fall apart. Commitments get broken. Preferred sites go to competitors. When you and your clients have prayed, planned, and invested energy into an outcome that doesn’t happen, disappointment can feel like a punch in the gut.

How you handle that disappointment is a test of wisdom and faith. You could scramble to assign blame, lash out, or spiral into self-doubt. Or you could acknowledge the pain honestly, bring it before God, and then ask, “Lord, what now? What are You protecting us from or redirecting us toward?”

Hope deferred does make the heart sick—but it doesn’t have to make the heart hard. Wisdom allows space for grief while refusing to let bitterness take root. It keeps your heart open to new guidance instead of stuck in “what might have been.”

Your response in disappointment models to clients and colleagues what it looks like to trust a sovereign God even when your immediate hopes are unfulfilled.

Reflection Questions

What recent disappointment is still sitting heavily on my heart or my client’s heart?

How can I process that disappointment with God instead of just pushing past it or stewing in it?

Prayer

Lord, You see the desires that went unmet. Meet me in disappointment, heal my heart, and guide me into whatever You have next. Help me respond in faith, not bitterness. Amen.
