Wisdom in Hiring Experts [Real Estate Dev #175]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” — Proverbs 11:14.
Devotional
Developers depend upon specialists.
Architects, engineers, attorneys, contractors, environmental consultants, planners, brokers, accountants, and lenders each contribute expertise you do not personally possess.
Selecting those professionals is itself an act of wisdom.
Price matters.
But the cheapest consultant can become extraordinarily expensive if poor judgment creates delays, redesigns, disputes, or missed risks.
Technical competence matters, but so do responsiveness, communication, integrity, and judgment.
Ask whether the person understands your objectives.
Ask whether they tell you difficult truths.
Ask how they respond when they make mistakes.
Ask whether their reputation reflects reliability.
Wise advisers do more than execute instructions. They improve your thinking.
They recognize issues you have not considered and sometimes challenge the direction you originally intended to take.
That requires humility from the developer.
If you hire experts only to validate your decisions, you are wasting much of the wisdom God may be providing through them.
Build a team whose competence you respect and whose character you trust.
Then listen.
Reflection Questions
• How do I choose professional advisers?
• Do I value low cost more than wise judgment?
• Have I created room for experts to challenge my thinking?
Action Step
Evaluate one key professional relationship based on competence, character, communication, and willingness to speak candidly.
Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom in selecting the people who advise and support my work. Surround me with professionals of skill and integrity, and give me humility to listen to their counsel. Amen.
