Wisdom in Knowing When to Press and When to Pause [Commercial Broker #159]

Scripture

“The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” — Proverbs 16:9 (ESV)

Devotional

Some moments in deal-making require persistence—pressing forward, pushing for clarity, asking for answers. Other moments require patience—stepping back, giving people time, waiting for God to open a door that human force cannot move.

Wisdom knows the difference.

Pressing when you should pause creates strain, resentment, or rushed decisions. Pausing when you should press creates drift, confusion, and missed opportunities. How do you know the difference? Through prayer, experience, listening carefully, and paying attention to the Holy Spirit’s nudges.

Sometimes you sense momentum building—this is the time to press. Other times you sense tension increasing—this is the moment to pause. And sometimes God closes a door completely—inviting you to surrender, not strive.

Your job is to be sensitive; His job is to establish your steps.

Reflection Questions

Am I currently pressing in a situation where I should be pausing—or vice versa?

What signs help me discern which posture God is prompting in each moment?

Prayer

Holy Spirit, teach me when to press and when to pause. Guide my steps so I move with Your timing, not my own impulses. Amen.
