Wisdom in Listening to Counsel [Commercial Broker #145]

Scripture

“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” — Proverbs 15:22 (ESV)

Devotional

Commercial deals often involve attorneys, accountants, lenders, architects, engineers, planners, and more. Each sees the situation from a different angle. Pride says, “I already know enough; I don’t need their input.” Wisdom says, “Their counsel is a gift.”

Listening to counsel doesn’t mean you abandon your own judgment; it means you enrich it. You weigh perspectives, ask questions, and synthesize input into clearer guidance for your client. You’re not threatened by expertise—you welcome it.

There will be times you disagree. In those cases, you can say, “I hear your concern; here’s how I’m thinking about it.” But if you consistently dismiss or ignore wise advisors, your plans are more likely to fail—not because God is against you, but because you’re rejecting the means He uses to protect you.

Teachability and counsel-seeking are core ingredients of godly wisdom.

Reflection Questions

Whose counsel do I need to seek more often in my current work—internally or externally?

Do I ever ignore good advice because it conflicts with what I’ve already decided to do?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the many professionals You place around me. Give me a humble heart to seek and weigh counsel, and grant me discernment to apply it wisely. Amen.
