Wisdom in Managing Risk, Not Eliminating It [Commercial Broker #144]

Scripture

“The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.” — Proverbs 22:3 (ESV)

Devotional

Every deal carries risk. Lease-up may be slower than expected. Tenants may default. Construction costs may rise. The wise broker isn’t trying to eliminate all risk—that’s impossible—but to identify, manage, and price it appropriately.

Prudence asks, “Where are the real dangers here? How likely are they? What impact would they have? How can we structure this deal to mitigate, share, or compensate for that risk?” You’re not driven by fear, but neither are you naïve. You help clients walk neither blindly nor frozen in place.

Sometimes prudence says, “This risk is acceptable given the upside.” Other times, it says, “This risk is disproportionate; we should not proceed.” Either way, you’re honoring God by protecting people from unnecessary harm and helping them make decisions in the light, not the dark.

Faith does not deny risk; it faces it with God and wisdom.

Reflection Questions

Do I tend to minimize risk to keep things moving—or overstate risk and stifle good opportunities?

Which current deal needs a clearer, prayerful conversation about real risks and how to handle them?

Prayer

God of wisdom, help me see dangers clearly and respond prudently. Use me to protect my clients from unnecessary harm while also helping them move forward when it’s wise. Amen.
