Wisdom in Selecting a Site [Real Estate Dev #173]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“The prudent gives thought to his steps.” — Proverbs 14:15.
Devotional
A development begins long before construction.
It begins with the decision about where to build.
Site selection involves countless variables: access, visibility, utilities, demographics, zoning, environmental conditions, traffic, competition, neighborhood context, and future growth.
The excitement of a site can make developers see possibilities before problems.
Wisdom does both.
It recognizes opportunity while giving careful thought to the path ahead.
For the Christian developer, site selection should also include questions beyond economics.
What will this project contribute to the surrounding community?
Does the proposed use fit the location responsibly?
Could the project create unnecessary burdens for neighbors?
Are there opportunities to improve the area rather than simply extract value from it?
God's call to stewardship applies to place.
Land is not merely inventory. It is part of a community and ultimately belongs to God.
A wise developer therefore asks not only, “Can we build here?”
But also, “What should be built here?”
That second question can lead to better projects—and more faithful stewardship.
Reflection Questions
• What factors dominate my site-selection decisions?
• Do I sufficiently consider the surrounding community?
• How could a current site create value beyond financial return?
Action Step
For one potential site, write down three ways the eventual development could positively or negatively affect the surrounding community.
Prayer
Lord, give me wisdom in choosing where and what to build. Help me see land as something entrusted to my care and make decisions that serve both the project and the people around it. Amen.
