Wisdom in Slowing Down Internal Reactions [Commercial Broker #155]

Scripture

“Know this… let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” — James 1:19 (ESV)

Devotional

In deal-making, emotions run high—frustration, fear, excitement, impatience. Quick emotional reactions often cloud judgment and damage relationships. A wise broker learns to slow down internal reactions so that responses are thoughtful, not reactive.

Being “slow to speak and slow to anger” is not weakness; it is strength under control. When you pause before responding—especially to tense emails, unexpected offers, or aggressive tactics—you create space for the Holy Spirit to guide your words.

You might discover that your initial interpretation was wrong, or that the situation is less threatening than it felt. Wisdom often emerges in those few seconds of restraint.

Be quick to listen—to the other side, to your client, to your own heart, and to God. Discernment thrives when emotions are submitted to the Spirit rather than allowed to run freely.

Reflection Questions

Where do I most often react too quickly—emails, calls, negotiations, internal conversations?

What practice can I adopt to create space before responding? (Breath prayer, short pause, counting to five?)

Prayer

Holy Spirit, slow down my reactions and guide my responses. Help me listen well and speak with wisdom instead of emotion. Amen.
