Work, Family, and God’s Design [TDPOW #39]

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:6 — “Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.”

Devotional

Work is part of God’s design—but it is not all of His design. You were created for relationship, rest, worship, and community, not just productivity. When work expands to fill every corner of your life, even good work begins to crowd out God’s best.

Scripture reminds us that endless toil, even when it looks successful, can be empty—“a striving after wind.” God did not intend your family, friendships, health, or spiritual life to be sacrificed on the altar of achievement. He calls you to a balanced life where work is important but not ultimate.

This balance will look different in each season—some are busier than others. But the principle remains: your worth is not measured by how much you produce. You are a child of God, not a machine. Choosing to leave work at a reasonable time, to be present at home, to listen to your loved ones, or to rest rather than overwork can be a deeply spiritual decision.

Reflection Questions:

1. In what ways has work sometimes crowded out family, rest, or spiritual health in your life?

2. What boundaries or rhythms might God be inviting you to adjust?

3. How can you honor God today not only in your work, but also in how you step away from it?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the gift of work and the gift of relationships. Help me honor Your design for a balanced life. Give me wisdom to set healthy boundaries and courage to live by them. Amen.
