Scripture: Ephesians 6:6 — “…not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.”
Devotional
There is a big difference between working only when someone is watching and working “from the heart.” Paul warns against “eye-service”—doing just enough to look good in front of others—because it treats work as performance instead of worship.
As a servant of Christ, you are called to do the will of God from the heart. That means your motivation runs deeper than external pressure. You’re not just managing impressions; you’re seeking to honor the Lord. Even when no one is watching, He is—and that’s good news, because it means your unseen faithfulness matters to Him.
Working from the heart doesn’t mean you never struggle with motivation, but it does mean you regularly realign your motives with God’s purposes. You remember who you’re ultimately serving and ask Him to renew your desire to please Him above people.
Reflection Questions:
Are there areas where you’re tempted to work harder when people are watching than when they are not?
How can you practically remind yourself that you are a servant of Christ in your daily tasks?
What might change if you focused on doing God’s will “from the heart” instead of for appearances?
Prayer
Lord, free me from working just for human approval. Help me do Your will from the heart. Fill my work with sincerity, integrity, and genuine desire to please You above all. Amen.
