Working Well Across Departments [Accountant #190]
Listen to today's devotional:
Scripture
“If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” — Romans 12:18.
Devotional
Accounting does not operate in isolation. Your work intersects with operations, sales, human resources, leadership, purchasing, technology, and many other functions. Each group has different priorities, pressures, vocabulary, and ways of viewing the organization, and those differences can easily create frustration.
You may wonder why another department does not understand something that seems obvious from an accounting perspective. They may feel equally frustrated with processes they consider burdensome or overly complicated. Collaboration requires humility because it asks you to understand another person’s challenges before assuming carelessness or resistance.
Instead of expecting unquestioned compliance, explain why important processes matter. Listen when someone identifies a procedure that creates unnecessary difficulty. Look for solutions that protect appropriate accountability while also making it easier for others to succeed. Strong organizations are built when people recognize that they are serving a common mission rather than defending departmental territory.
As a Christian accountant, you can become a bridge between groups. Bring clarity instead of criticism, ask questions rather than making assumptions, and work toward solutions that respect both financial stewardship and operational realities. Peace does not mean avoiding legitimate disagreement. It means handling those disagreements constructively.
